Biking Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego

This is a unique biking experience which will show you the most impressive sights in Patagonia. From the glaciers of southern Patagonia to the island of Tierra del Fuego, you will cycle along incredible mountainous scenery, observe wildlife, camp in unforgettable areas, cross the Magellan Strait and appreciate the immensity of the well known Patagonian Steppes.Highlights: Perito Moreno Glacier, Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas, Magellan Strait, Tierra del Fuego.

Day 01 – El Calafate. Arrive to El Calafate on the shores of Lago Argentino. Make your own way to the hotel. This day you will meet your biking companions with whom you will share 14 exciting days. Accommodation in Hosteria or Lodge.

Day 02 – Perito Moreno Glacier. They will spend this day exploring the Perito Moreno Glacier. After driving along Lago Argentino for about 1 hour, we arrive to Los Glaciares National Park. We continue driving through this winding road with views of the glacier and its surrounding lakes and peaks until we reach  a view point from where we will appreciate the immensity of this glacier. We can get closer to its front wall (about 50 mts high) as we walk along the easy paths. If we are lucky enough, we might even watch and listen the huge ice crackings that plunge into the lake. Return to El Calafate in the afternoon. Overnight at hosteria or lodge in Calafate (B).

Day 03 – Calafate / Tapi-Aike. After breakfast, commence our biking journey towards Tapi-Aike. We will set up our campsite before we reach this place. This day you will feel the immensity of the Patagonia Steppes, cycling on gravel roads with strong winds. Distance: 150 kms (90 on paved road). Approximately 8 hours. Camping (B,L,D)

Day 04 – Tapi-Aike / Cerro Castillo. After a good nights sleep, continue our way towards the Chilean border, located just a couple of hours away from Torres del Paine National Park. Our campsite will be set near the border. Distance: 69 kms (40 kms paved). Approx 5 hours. Camping (B,L,D).

Day 05 – Cerro Castillo / Puerto Natales. Ride south to the fishing town of Puerto Natales which will be our base for two nights. Distance: 65 kms (gravel road). Approx 4 hours. Accommodation in Puerto Natales (B,L,D)

Day 06 – At leisure. This is a day to relax and explore the area. After a few days riding against the wind, we will need some time to recover energies. You can arrange a full day trip to visit the fantastic Torres del Paine National Park which is about 3 hours away from the town. Other options are available from here.

Day 07 – Puerto Natales / Villa Tehuelche
Continue riding south towards Villa Tehuelche, just over half way from Punta Arenas. The scenery is still dramatic although the roads will be slightly busier. Distance: 155 kms (paved road, back wind). Approx 6 hours. Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 08 – Villa Tehuelche / Punta Arenas
Continue south until we reach the biggest city in southern Patagonia, Punta Arenas. It is still a thriving port, and, after a few days of living in the wild, we will feel overwhelmed by the many people who inhabit this area, although the population is of about 140 thousand. Time to walk around and visit its museums and taste the very unique King Crabs. Distance: 90 kms (paved). Approx 4 hours. Accommodation in Punta Arenas (B,L,D).

Day 09 – Punta Arenas / Tierra del Fuego
This will be a memorable day as we cross the famous Estrecho de Magallanes (Magellan Strait) by Ferryboat to Porvenir. Continue riding along the Strait until we decide to camp. Distance: 130 kms (gravel). Approx 6 hours. Camping (B,L,D)

Day 10 – Rio Grande
Continue riding and cross the Chilean border into Argentina, still within the Island of Tierra del Fuego. Arrive to the city of Rio Grande on the Atlantic coast. Distance: 130 kms (30 of gravel roads). Approx 6 hours. Accommodation in Rio Grande. (B,L,D)

Day 11 – Rio Grande / Tolhuin.
After breakfast, we continue cycling south along an incredible scenery of woods and rivers until we reach the village of Tolhuin, situated along the shores of the Fagnano Lake. Distance: 113 kms (paved). Approx 5 hours. Camping (B,L,D).

Day 12 – Tolhuin / Ushuaia
This day we finally reach the End of the World, the small but charming city port of Ushuaia, our base for the next two nights. We will climb a steep slope with incredible views to then ride all the way down to Ushuaia. Distance: 100 kms (50 paved). Approx 6 hours. Accommodation in Ushuaia (B,L,D)

Day 13 – Tierra del Fuego National Park.
Full day ride to this lovely National Park, rich in flora and fauna. Return to Ushuaia late afternoon. Farewell dinner with all our team. Distance: 45 kms (mostly gravel). Accommodation in Ushuaia (B,L,D)

Day 14 – Trip finishes.
Trip concludes after breakfast.
